A little bit about me:
Bette Frank Leahy, BA, BArch, MA, CAGS
I have lots of initials after my name but, first and foremost: I am an Artist.
As long as I can remember, I have been working with my hands to make things.
I like to make all kinds of things: I make paintings, buildings, poetry, gardens, sculptures, food, quilts, yarn, collages, felted objects, labyrinths, clothing, paper maché ritual bowls, and gelatin mono prints, to name a few.
The process of creation enables my ability to discover and
understand the universe and myself.
By trying to paint light; I come to understand light.
By painting in and of nature; I enter the world of nature in a new and fresh
way and to come to understand myself in relationship to the universe.
The experience of creating: be it planning, preparing, painting, or planting –
always leads to, and reveals a new thought, a new idea, and a new opportunity.
I feel compelled to paint, to write and to create.
An innate and essential urge, as much a part of me as my humanity.
I need to make marks on the earth and on pieces of paper.
My main interest going towards the future is in the integration of art and healing.
I am an Expressive and Creative Arts Educational facilitator. I conduct workshops and classes in Expressive Arts for Healing, Self Discovery and Transformation. I am a Reiki II practitioner and have studied other energy healing practices as well. I love to mentor others in the creative process as well as teaching and guiding people who are going through transitions to move towards healing and wholeness.
I have been a licensed architect in New York State since 1992 and have over 15 years of professional experience in residential and commercial design. I practiced architecture in New York City before moving to the Boston area a number of years ago. Aside from oil, acrylic and tempera painting, I am also a fiber artist and work in textile painting, quilt making, spinning and dying, weaving, knit, crochet, needle felting and wet felting. My crocheted and felted bags, bowls, flowers and vases are for sale in several stores in the Boston area. I also make paper maché ritual bowls. I am a collage artist and create one-of-a-kind collage books and cards. My most recent work includes gelatin monotypes.
I have done Expressive Arts with hospice patients and with cancer patients at Dana Farber Hospital in Boston. I currently work with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients in an Assisted Living and Day Program in Boston.
I conduct workshops and classes in Expressive Arts for Healing, Self Discovery and Transformation.
